@mnm, no offense, I just have had this way too many times when having a discussion, it's a perfect way to always end an otherwise lovely discussion about our country's policies and how our tax $$$ are spent.

I have a student friend who make no real income and who has student loans for his $60K/year tuition for dental school and who's wife is a stay at home mom and they refuse to take WIC or other handouts.

I have immense respect for them and he's able to respect himself when he looks in the mirror.

That's why we have Foodstamps. For people like him.

If you're friend was falling off a cliff and said he doesn't want any help up, would you respect him?

I know where you're coming from, people abusing the system. But in a case where there is a genuine need (as your buddy's) not only don't I think he should take advantage of the help but he also shouldn't be embarrassed.

He feels that in a few years he'll be making a good salary. He strongly doesn't believe in government handouts and says he would feel like a hypocrite if he took them. 
His pride is worth more to him than some gallons of milk every month.  And I respect that.

I have another friend who gladly takes the WIC and I have nothing against him.  He doesn't go bragging about it being awesome to need a handout but he can use it and is in school so that in short time he won't need it anymore.

Good for both of 'em I say.

I would sooner take a job in Afghanistan than accept handouts (unless halacha would compel me to take the stamps over sakana).

I'm not saying that is a logical thing but for me personally it would be worth it. And yes I've been in similar situations before.

That is true, these programs were meant to help you move on, they weren't intended to make a "living" off of the programs.
