Mby's point is that you can do the OJ on the stopover, so it would work doing DTW/TLV-TLV/DTW ORD/LIH, however doing what sky wants I dont think will work because your backtracking.

Key quote: "An open-jaw ticket is an airline ticket in which a traveler returns to the airline from a city other than the one in which they arrived, or in which the final destination is not the same as the original departure city"

Nothing in there conflicts with what I said. AFAIK, you cannot have an open jaw en route to a destination, but I've been wrong before :)

Also, as bp said, this would seem to be a clear case of backtracking (something I thought I mentioned, but apparently didn't, and could be the reason why I thought the routing looked illegal).

But, explain this for me --

From another blog:

Sometimes people tell me they want to do a routing like:

IAD -> LHR

FRA -> ATH

WAW -> IAD

They think there are two open jaws, the first between London and Frankfurt and the second between Athens and Warsaw. In fact this cannot be done on one award.

The reason is that one of these putative open jaws is en route. For instance if we consider Athens the destination of the first oneway, there would be an illegal attempt at an en route open jaw with no flight between London and Frankfurt.

Or if we claimed that London was the destination of the first oneway, then what happened between Athens and Warsaw? There would need to be a flight there for the routing to be legal.

not sure. But i dont see anywhere in united's award rules that you cant have an open jaw en route. So I dont know why it wouldnt be allowed

Like I said...

I've done this quite a few times, and never once had to HUCA as a result of it being against the rules.

 I have the DTW-FRA-TLV, TLV-FRA-DTW and I'd like to add the LIH-DTW. or any added flight to the end just to get the more value out of the trip.

I already have a separate award travel flight which has the added DTW-LIH flight at the end. Now if I could add the return to a different flight booked that would be great!

There will be a fee if you don't have status, obv worth it tho.

Also still have to surmount the backtracking issue, tho maybe with enough HUCA you can get it done.

the problem with adding something now is your changing your destination or origin which will incurr a change fee

i thought united used to say that you cant have a stop over on an itinerary only in the US but now it says
Quote
A stopover is permitted on roundtrip award travel only. One stopover is permitted, unless otherwise noted. Additional mileage may be required for Saver Awards within the mainland U.S., Alaska and Canada.
anyone know what they charge for a stop over

There will be a fee if you don't have status, obv worth it tho. Or no fee, depending on the IQ level of the agent you speak to.

Also still have to surmount the backtracking issue, tho maybe with enough HUCA you can for sure get it done.

FTFY. ;)

Far greater exploits have been attained with UA.
