So I finally had time to call United. So far I had one rep that seemed to be ok with the change but I got disconnected. Second rep said I can't do it because I am going back in the wrong direction. I asked him to try anyways and he said he did and it won't work.
The 3rd rep came back saying you can't do it either.

  Any number better to call than others for this type of thing?

Not having any luck.

No rep would book it for me. One actually got as far as having it show up in the reservation. I saw it on my end as well but it wouldn't actually ticket.

        Guess I will just add on a ticket to LA or somewhere routing actually allows. Oh well!

Sort of.  Calling while flying in middle of a itin makes things work much better than trying to pull shitck while initially booking.  You may have better luck fooling UA.com
