Mail Men stealing my account numbers!
« on: November 13, 2012, 12:38:48 PM »
I am not being paranoid. Over the last few months I have noticed that whenever we get new Credit cards delivered there is a small tear on the left side of the envelope through which one can peek in and read the account number of the cover letter. At first I thought it was a innocent tear but now after having multiple cards arrive with the same tear its confirmed.
What should I do about this? I do check my credit reports from time to time and everything looks normal.

That's interesting. My last two cards also came wripped like that as well as a gift card ordered from Sears.

Why would anything be on your credit reports if you are saying that they see you card number ?

I had a similar situation. I received my card in an envelope that looked torn. About a month later there were some unauthorized charges on the card.

"Mail PERSONS"

I had an issue in the past with mail persons stealing our Gap rebate cards. I can't imagine it was a Mail MAN though.

Don't be concerned about your credit cards (just review the statements carefully). What you should be worried about is whether they're looking for cash (or cash equivalent - Gap rebates - as milechazzer said). That might explain the tear without any card activity...

Incorrect. They are called mail carriers.

I also got one today torn top left and yes you could see the number. but its also torn on the bottom right and in general looks battered. is it possible the machines have a hard time with the envelope and for some reason tears on the top left?

“Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you”

Let me take a wild guess. All these are processed on the same type of automated machines. The stiffness of the CC is causing the tear as it is processed through the automated equipment.

If you really want to fix it then change it to “this is what is happening”.  ;)
