It depends on the airline.
Most airlines are 20,000 Starpoints=25,000 miles.
LAN is 20,000 Starpoints=50,000 LAN
Continental/United are not worthwhile as 20,000 Starpoints=12,500 CO/UA but there are plenty of other Star Alliance carriers to chhose from to travel on them.  Or you can trade someone Starpoints for AMEX points if you want CO miles.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Anyone know a way to transfer Starwoods from my friends account to mine so I have enough for a 5k bonus?

Don't think there is any other way

If you can prove that you live at the same address (ie utility bill, lease, etc)
Create professional looking itineraries.

Is there an issue transferring from a Starwoods account to an airline account in a different name?

I one time did the adress change and then did the transfer that day online then changed back to the original address  and a few days later they caught on and emailed me that they will transfer back all the points but all the points in the acct were already used up

Depends on the airline, most of them require matching names.
