Orbitz Fiasco
« on: November 19, 2012, 10:10:52 AM »
I booked a first class ticket through Orbitz from NYC-DFW on Delta. I just checked in, and they gave me an economy seat, saying that I only bought a fare class that was upgradable, not an actual first class ticket. I was checked in with a confirmed first seat, but apparently there was an equipment change to a smaller first class. I just noticed that Orbitz booked me into Fare code A, which after checking, is just an upgradable coach fare, and has leeway for them in case of change of equipment to leave me in economy, even though i was confirmed on the original equipment. I assume I am going after Orbitz for selling me an "upgradable" ticket as a first class ticket, which is not really a first class ticket, even though they claim that it should have been a first class ticket. Any thoughts/ideas?

Orbitz just informed me that they cant do anything on their end, and that I should take it up with Delta. It seems they just forward the fare request. This is what is currently showing on Deltas website when i put in the confirmation number.. they gave me 5B, which is an economy seat..

Who offered that to you? Delta?

I think I'd ask for more. How much was the ticket?

And how much was a coach ticket at the time?

+1, I'd ask for cash and if not dispute the charge

If I am understanding the situation correctly than in theory I would dispute the whole charge since you didn't get what you paid for.

Involuntary downgrades don't usually get a full refund. The airline will often just refund you the difference between a First and the current cost of economy, which may not be that much. I think what you may want to try is ask for $200 in cash in lieu of the Delta credit which expires and has other limitations.

I was downgraded on United EWR-ORD due to a broken seat and they gave me a $200 voucher and refused to give more even after multiple e-mail communications. This may have been because I still had a BF seat on my onward flight so only part of hte trip was downgraded. Maybe if the entire trip s downgraded, the situation is different.

Downgrades/Upgrades
In the event you are downgraded from First/Envoy to Economy Class on flights longer than 4,500km, you are entitled to monetary compensation equivalent to your    ticket price.
•    Where your journey includes a layover, the amount of monetary compensation equals the full price paid multiplied by the ratio of the distance you travelled
in Economy Class to the total flight distance
