I have it, don't like it.
It seems like the only good thing about it, is the new start menu. And it is only useful for apps. Any other programs just takes you to the regular desktop.
I can see this looking cool on the surface but not on a computer

Yes, you can upgrade from Win 8 to Win 7. You just need a Win 7 DVD

And that's why he called it an upgrade  :)

Is there any way to get an interface that looks like the older versions of windows? At least a standard start menu?

Just got a new laptop, so it came with win 8 to start with...sigh.

Can someone please explain the difference between Windows 8 and Windows RT to me? I can't seem to find anything online that clearly explains this point.

windows 8 is a full version of windows will run most programs and old windows programs - windows rt will only run windows apps and only newer programs. Basically windows rt is a tablet version that runs apps - not actually version of windows

Thanks. So the surface is running Windows RT, and there's no way to change it?

I'm not sure - I know that some tablets will be coming out running full windows 8 - I would assume with a little work you can prob run full windows 8 on the surface as well, but I won't speculate further as I haven't tried it yet

Seems reasonable. I've actually heard a lot of positive reviews about Windows 8, but most people are very down on Windows RT.
For everyone above not happy with Windows 8, was it 8 or rT you were using?

I need to revisit this one.
I decided to give Windows 8 (on PC) a serious one week trial, and now that I am done, I like it more than Windows 7.
It is quite easy to set things up to ignore the Metro Apps if you want to, and Windows itself is speedier - especially startup - and more intuitive. And some of the Apps can be time saving too.
The Start screen is pretty much a different form of the start menu, and once you get the hang of it, its really not much different than the Start Menu, and certainly not more of an inconvenience.

So what you're saying is that once you get used to the new look and it doesn't annoy you anymore, and you set things up to ignore the apps - which is probably the main thing they added - you're OK with it.
Isn't that pretty much Windows 7 :D
I've worked already on well over 100 windows 8 machines here is my 2 cents.
For most people the start up menu is annoying, Apps are wasted, and the performance for now is pretty much like windows 7. Why would you put apps into a machine capable of running programs! I don't get it (unless its touch).
It's as if MS decided they're jealous of the fact that android and ipads run apps and they said screw full programs we can run apps too.

Win8 still seems to have other benefits. My two favorites are the super quick start-up time, and the absence of "are you really sure you want to delete this file" messages. [When added all up, the average person probably spends a couple of days of their life responding to those pop-ups.]
I agree with you in general about the apps, but there are exceptions; some tasks are quicker with apps. For example, my bank sends you through some loops when accessing accounts online, (name, password, sec question etc), and their app is much quicker and easier to use. I guess it also helps to have dual-monitor setup, the apps only take up one monitor, you never really feel locked into that environment.

1. Reset the default programs for your files (right-click file, select "Open with>Choose default program").
2. Unpin/uninstall apps from the start screen (right-click apps on start screen, which will bring up these options at the bottom of the start screen).
