Bought a laptop with 8 installed. I'm used to 7 and it's hard to get used to the few things that are missing like the start menu.

Treat the start screen like the start menu.
What else is missing?

I haven't used 8 yet, though IMO the start menu is something MSFT should have gotten rid of a loooooong time ago.

Win8 still seems to have other benefits. My two favorites are the super quick start-up time, and the absence of "are you really sure you want to delete this file" messages. [When added all up, the average person probably spends a couple of days of their life responding to those pop-ups.]
Another important one if you have kids, the "Family Safety" setting has more features, and quite useful with regards to children accounts. [Not to say that its a complete solution, but there's definitely quite a lot of progress there.]

still feels crappy, has many many compatibility issues - and I've found many times shortens the battery life as well.

OK, one really lousy thing about Windows 8 is the size of the C:\Windows\WinSxS folder.
Its eating up 11GB out of my 55GB SSD.
Anyone (DH Data Recovery?) know a safe way to either minimize this folder, or move it to secondary hard drive.
[Yes, I heard about lmgtfy, but the advice there is very conflicting, and the official MS point-of-view seems to be "tough luck".
