I don't usually use my SLR on Auto, but when I got my first one, I did. The pictures you get on auto are way way better than any P&S on auto, including high end cameras like the Canon G15 (which doesn't cost much less than an entry level SLR.

You can get a refurbished  SLR for $320 or even less sometimes.

Most of the time they are basically knew and only have a couple hundred shots or less taken on them.

So I've decided to go with the T4i and get a 50mm prime lens for video. Should I splurge on the 1.4 or is 1.8 more then enough?

The 50mm 1.8 is an awesome portrait lens. You'll love it.
It should be every slr owners second lens.
Its the cheapest lens they make ~$120 and the results are amazing.

If you are shooting video primarily with the T4i, the 40mm 2.8 pancake lens may be a better option for you. It has an STM focusing motor inside which allows you to focus while filming. If you are new to DSLR video, you'll quickly learn that the hardest part of it to learn is how to manually focus consistently. I've never used it so I can't vouch for it but friends who have it are very happy with it.
At 2.8, it is a much slower lens than the 1.8 and a nonstandard focal length as opposed to 50mm.

Are these 40mm/50mm lenses actually better than the telephoto lens mentioned upthread or just better value? Also specifically for photos what is the best second lens for beginners?

Which lens mentioned above?

Also it depends what you're taking pictures of. People? Scenery? Kids?

You would need to spend some serious money to get a quality zoom. The low-priced ones are garbage.

Get  50mm. Try it out. You'll probably enjoy it.

The 40/50 mm are called prime lenses (ie, no zoom). They are sharper and have a much lower aperture ie f1.8 or f.2.8 vs f4 on the zoom lens.
In general, the more the lens does, the lower the quality.
The lower the f number the wider the aperture opens which means more light, so better in low light situations, and also smaller "depth of field" ie blurrier backgrounds.
You will get a much sharper and nicer shot with a prime lens, but you wont have any zoom.

If you need to get a little closer to the action, go with the zoom lens, but if you want amazing portraits, go with the 50mm. I would personally go for the 2nd!

Yes, the results of hi end glass are so much better that the consumer zoom lenses, but they are not garbage! If you are a pro photographer and can afford to spend 2k+ on awesome zoom lenses, then go for it, but for hobbyists, or for photographers starting off, the consumer zoom lenses are more than good enough and are not garbage. Note: the above linked zoom lens does have 4.5/5 star rating.

+1  Some of the low end ones are better than others, but I agree not garbage.

You guys may have had other experiences with them. My experiences with low priced zooms were pretty bad. The chromatic aberration, barrel distortion, and overall bad quality of the lens, especially at both ends of the focal range, were terrible.
I think someone would be much better suited with a 50mm and 100mm prime. At least 2 stops faster, so much sharper, and much better bokeh than the linked lens.
That being said. To each his own :) If it works for you, great.

It also depends on your standards. Big time.

This Zoom lens isn't bad for the price.

Though I wouldn't recommend this one

I just ordered the T4i with stock 18-55 (free), 50mm and 40mm pancake. Also got an extra battery and external charger and a case. Just under 1k.
Who needs to buy Amex points? :)

I want to see if they give me significantly different video. If they do I'll keep them both.
