If anybody comes across a great deal on an SLR camera please let me know! Been looking for one for a surprise for my wife for a while now but the good ones are so expensive! Thanks!! Also does anybody have any insight on which ones to consider quality-wise?

Not an SLR, but the S100 on sale today at Amazon has full manual controls:

i would go with dan, if ur not crazy into pics then go for a good point and shoot, but if u are very into pics whether it be family portraits or scenery i would suggest a slr

I don't care for manual controls as much as being able to take a quick crisp high quality picture.

I've never had a point and shoot (and I've been through alot) that can do half as well as any SLR I've seen.

I'm not sure you know how to use it if you think it was horrible. The Rebel series cameras are one of the best for entry level Dslr's

+1 unless you really know what you're doing and are extremely critical then yes, the newer SLR cameras by Canon don't take as nice shots as older models unfortunately. But for the average person an SLR should take nicer shots (especially children shots) than a point and shoot.

Lots of high end P&S cameras will give you good quality photos. The reason you saw great photos from SLR's is because generally those who use SLR's are more knowledgeable in the art of photography. If you don't know much about photography, a good SLR will not make you a professional photographer

I haven't found that to be true. I am hardly an expert photographer at all. Every picture I took with my BIL SLR camera came out stunning while my P&S pics were eh.

@YankyDoodle:

Same with my wife.
We were reluctant to buy our T2i DSLR, my wife has no special photography skills, but per the advice of sky121 we did go ahead and ordered it.
Now a few months later, were so thankful for his advice. My wife loves it, its so sharp and clear, especially toddler shots.
The first month we used the auto customize feature which automatically sets all the options according to your position and location! But as time go by we learn more and more how to use it and set all the functions manually.
Thanks again, Sky121!

I've seen plenty of really bad SLR photos.

+1  Any camera can take a bad shot. And any camera (even a point and shoot) can take a great shot.

I have plenty of photos that came out amazing with my old Canon 880  http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD880IS-Stabilized-Silver/dp/B001G5ZTN6  - my favorite Canon camera to date.

I think a lot of times people get SLR's and start playing with the settings when they don't know how yet. Also a lot of the point and shoots will produce shots that look better because of various settings (more saturated for ex) but not necessarily produce the most true/real colors.

At the end of the day you should be able to get a great shot with ANY camera. But especially when you have kids moving all over the place an SLR comes in real handy.

I knew how to use my canon but i. The end the shutter speed was slow, the camera wasnt focussing quick enough and all in all it was a great buy.  I bout a t3 not i! From what I hear everyone lives there i series - and i even brought the camera to b&h and it just wasnt great for the money i spent - though to be honest the nikon d90 is prob top 3 camera's out there and its well over 3yrs old so its not always the newer models that are better. Though i bought a d5100 and love it (nikon)

Though i had an old canon point and shoot which was amazing and it wasnt like the slr but def did an over achieving job but it broke got a newer model and its ok.
