Talking about a higher end P&S like the Canon G12. Another good option for you if you aren't looking for more than better quality are the mirroless ILC cameras which will give you more range by being able to change lenses.
I haven't found that to be true. I am hardly an expert photographer at all. Every picture I took with my BIL SLR camera came out stunning while my P&S pics were eh.

This
+1  Any camera can take a bad shot. And any camera (even a point and shoot) can take a great shot.

I have plenty of photos that came out amazing with my old Canon 880  http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD880IS-Stabilized-Silver/dp/B001G5ZTN6  - my favorite Canon camera to date.

I think a lot of times people get SLR's and start playing with the settings when they don't know how yet. Also a lot of the point and shoots will produce shots that look better because of various settings (more saturated for ex) but not necessarily produce the most true/real colors.

At the end of the day you should be able to get a great shot with ANY camera. But especially when you have kids moving all over the place an SLR comes in real handy.

Just bought the Canon t4i. It has rave reviews from every camera expert I know as an excellent dSLR with an especially small learning curve for amateurs. It is on sale right now from Amazon for $649 http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Rebel-18-0-Digital-18-55mm/dp/B00894YWD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362104107&sr=8-1&keywords=canon+t4i (same price as the camera body itself w/o the lens). In addition you get a 2% rebate and you can purchase this telephoto zoom for $150 off http://www.amazon.com/Canon-55-250mm-4-0-5-6-Telephoto-Digital/dp/B0011NVMO8/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (of course can be resold on ebay to recoup some of the cost of the camera). Especially if you need a new camera anyway, to me this is a no-brainer.

Nice find! Good deal with the lens.
It's actually a pretty good lens for the (regular) privce if you decide to keep it.

Do you think it's worth keeping? I don't think my wife or I would be the type to swap lenses in and out often. What type of pictures would come out significantly better with the telephoto lens vs. the regular 18-55 mm lens?

Nature, close up portraits vs anything else on the kit lens...

I'd say perhaps play around with it a bit and see. Do you have children?
Take your kid outside and use both lenses and see what you like.

Even if you don't end up using it that often it's still a good deal for $50.
On the other hand if you're never going to use it then obviously you're missing out by not selling it.

So if I want to take pictures of my daughter (one of the primary purposes of the camera) or close-ups in general it seems this is the lens to use... Good to know, I'm happy I got it in that case.

Was it a mistake not to get the 18-135 mm lens? Or does the 55-250 mm telephoto lens more than make up for it (albeit with the extra shlep of swapping lenses)?

IMHO, no it was def not a mistake. You'll probably end up carrying the 18-55mm most of the time just for it's size.  It also depends how much you're into taking pictures I guess. The truth is there are plenty of people out there with only the standard kit lens who are plenty happy.

If the size will prevent you from taking it then it's not worth it at all.

The telephoto gives you much more range, so for me it would be a no-brainer. You eventually get used to shlepping the extra lens (or lenses, flash etc.) when you need it.

Yes and no. Some people get used to. Others don't.  It depends how much you care and how interested you are in getting the best shot. I've found many people will just stop shlepping their SLR camera especially if it's packed up in a case with multiple lenses etc.

You have to know what works for you.

You're probably right. I was speaking from my own experience.

telephoto?! very overrated and a bit of a waste of money personally (obviously 50$ aint bad) but i personally would suggest buy a body and find a lens separately (a better one i.e. 18-155 if u have canon and 18-105 if you have nikon) skip the extra lenses and telephoto.

the 18-55 is a very small zoom lens. i first bought a t3 and i hated it so i sold it on bay (475) and bought a nikon d5100 body and 18-105 lens sep ($650) its abnormal amazing and clear the pictures. and the the shots are super quick and never little lag time if at all any. i have a 5 month old and i have tons of pictures of him smiling (meaning hard to catch pictures)

What would be the best lens for the T4i when it comes to shooting video?

how far are the subjects. usually the lens kit is fine just to be best off use a tripod, if there a bit farther, try getting a self focussing lens. i know the nikons have that, in middle of shooting vids, they refocus if its looses focus

The T4i has plenty of those stabilization features, I just need to decide if I should start with more then the 18-55 lens if I'll be shooting video.

Unless you will be shooting professional video, the kit lens will be fine. And FWIU, rots5 is talking about focus, not stabilization.
