The T4i is $650 with a lens, the D90 is $800 with no lens. I'm looking more for video then photo so I'll probably end up buying canon. I wish there was something affordable that took a compact flash card though, those micro SD cards get hot very quickly.

I found the T4i for $560

i just looked again i have a d5100 sorry

bought the body from b& for 450 (or something like that)
and bought the lens from somewheres for 200

best thing i ever did, if your somewhat a camera person and want more zoom (not telephoto) then it was so worth it then the kit lens or if you want more portraits with shaded backgrounds go for the 50mm

That makes more sense.

if you want more portraits with shaded backgrounds go for the 50mm

You probably mean the 35mm, which is the DX equivalent of the 50mm prime.

then get a vid cam  not a slr!

+1. If it is primarily for video, and you are not very familiar with customizing settings on an SLR, you should definitely go with a camcorder.

According to just about everyone who knows anything, unless you are prepared to spend 10k+ on a camcorder, you are much better off with a DSLR.

I know nothing absolutely nothing about photography.
Interested in paying around with an slr. how would you recommend I start?

Do you have one that you could try out before you buy? Just take pictures of family members, at your local park, or on the street. You get a feel for it that way.

This book is a great resource for beginners to understand the basic concepts.

That is true if you want to film professionally. If you are looking to do videos of family trips, parties, graduations etc., you will find yourself too busy focusing and playing with settings, whereas with a camcorder you press record and stop, and that's all there is to it.

Buy one you're potentionally interested in that has no restocking fee and good return policy. (Walmart? Amazon?) And play with it.

IMO any entry level SLR from Canon or Nikon. I'm more of a Canon fan but that's just me.
