I'm more of a Canon fan but that's just me.
I know nothing absolutely nothing about photography. Interested in paying around with an slr. how would you recommend I start?
+1U can also look into podcasts if u have a long subway/bus ride... they have some good info especially if your are not accustomed to the many different settings the camera has to offer... if u buy a DSLR and just leave it in Automatic mode, IMO u just wasted your money...
It would be a big shame but def not a waste of money if you have kids. Leaving your camera on automatic will still get you shots you'd otherwise miss with your point and shoot.
I am not saying that you should waste your time while you are with your kids/family trying to set your camera to the right setting... but knowing what lens would do a better job, knowing the correlation between ISO, shutter speed and apperture value, is IMO a must when you own a DSLR.
Agreed. You can also get a cheap P&S with full manual mode and learn the fundamentals from that. When you know all the concepts and settings and feel limited by the capabilities of the P&S, then its time to buy a DSLR.

I didn't mean you'd miss the shots because you were playing with the settings, I meant you'd miss the shots on a P & S just because of how slow the shutter is going.
i agree, even though i know the setting (not great but def decently) i still like using automatic, the shutter speed is abnormal, and automatic on my slr chooses setting for you, as in if the camera detects it a macro type shot, it automatically will put the setting in macro mode, and so on
Any decent P&S these days has very minimal shutter lag. In the hands of an newbie, the shutter lag of a P&S will not make much of a difference in capturing the shot.
lol a P&S can do that... after reading your owner's manual 1-2 times and reading photography blogs or tutorials like www.phototips.biz u'll realize that you had sooo much to learn and that the capabilities your camera has to offer are just in a different league than a P&S...
i love to read up more on the diff settings. i am always looking for more. I was just saying, that even leaving it on auto is still good.
Why would you aim for good after spending so much money??
Using auto occasionally with a DSLR is fine. Buying a DSLR and only shooting on auto is not and a waste of money.
Haha. Is your mom a soccer mom? They seem to be the majority of the people buying DSLR's and leaving them on Auto.
