I'm more of a Canon fan but that's just me.

I know nothing absolutely nothing about photography.
Interested in paying around with an slr. how would you recommend I start?
U can also look into podcasts if u have a long subway/bus ride... they have some good info especially if your are not accustomed to the many different settings the camera has to offer... if u buy a DSLR and just leave it in Automatic mode, IMO u just wasted your money...

It would be a big shame but def not a waste of money if you have kids. Leaving your camera on automatic will still get you shots you'd  otherwise miss with your point and shoot.

Agreed.
You can also get a cheap P&S with full manual mode and learn the fundamentals from that. When you know all the concepts and settings and feel limited by the capabilities of the P&S, then its time to buy a DSLR.

I am not saying that you should waste your time while you are with your kids/family trying to set your camera to the right setting... but knowing what lens would do a better job, knowing the correlation between ISO, shutter speed and apperture value, is IMO a must when you own a DSLR.

I didn't mean you'd miss the shots because you were playing with the settings, I meant you'd miss the shots on a P & S just because of how slow the shutter is going.

i agree, even though i know the setting (not great but def decently) i still like using automatic, the shutter speed is abnormal, and automatic on my slr chooses setting for you, as in if the camera detects it a macro type shot, it automatically will put the setting in macro mode, and so on
If you have any questions please search and then ask. PM me for detailed help.

Any decent P&S these days has very minimal shutter lag. In the hands of an newbie, the shutter lag of a P&S will not make much of a difference in capturing the shot.

lol a P&S can do that... after reading your owner's manual 1-2 times and reading photography blogs or tutorials like www.phototips.biz u'll realize that you had sooo much to learn and that the capabilities your camera has to offer are just in a different league than a P&S...

Getting a DSLR and leaving it on auto is wasting your money. Get a high-end P&S like the Canon S series and leave that on auto. You will save money and have a longer zoom range.

Using auto occasionally with a DSLR is fine. Buying a DSLR and only shooting on auto is not and a waste of money.

Haha. Is your mom a soccer mom? :P They seem to be the majority of the people buying DSLR's and leaving them on Auto.

I don't usually use my SLR on Auto, but when I got my first one, I did. The pictures you get on auto are way way better than any P&S on auto, including high end cameras like the Canon G15 (which doesn't cost much less than an entry level SLR.
