Israeli Parent w/Israel Passport
« on: December 03, 2012, 12:31:13 PM »
So I am traveling to Israel and I have an Israeli passport, do my children automatically need an Israeli passport as well? They were born in the United States.

Any insight on this would be great, the consulate says we must have a passport for the children as well. Do we or don't we?

American or Israeli?  You definitely need a passport to fly internationally but if they are born in America (or even in Israel for that matter as long as the child becomes an American citizen) you need an American passport CMIIW

As a child I've flown to Israel many times with my Israeli father and to the best of my knowledge I've never had an Israeli passport. Unless things changed in recent years (and by recent I mean over 20 :) ) an American passport should be enough.

it used to be that if a parent was born in israel the child is automatically israeli even if born in the us, in which case it might be a problem

but that hasnt been the case for some 20+ years now

Thank you for clarify it for us!

So I asked a round a few more people and we even called the consulate they all say there is a 50/50 chance that they will harass you to obtain a passport for the children on the way out.

The consulate in New York confirms that we must make a passport for each of the children flying with an US passport while one of the parents are israeli.

I am so confused!

Definitely less than 20. Two of my sisters were illegally forced to get a TZ under 18 years of age...

They still interrogate me sometimes when entering and leaving.

I usually get an extra question or 2 on the way out (so your father's name is so and so...?) but nothing beyond that.

That was a suggestion I also heard, how ever fancy this... Do you think that 5 people on the same flight, with the same last name, sitting next to each other... Approch two diffrent immigration officers, and they don't know that your traveling together?

I think they are smart enough to put 2 and 2 together. That is where the issue lies if there is even an issue.

That can depend on the last name, I'm willing to bet that every flight into Israel has at least 2 unrelated Cohens on-board :))

Israel knows exactly who are you. It all depends if they feel like making you "trouble" or not.

The consulate told me yesterday that technically they need one, and they might get stopped or might not get stopped on the way out.

Alliteratively I could schlep myself to the Dept. of State get a Notary Apostle (sp?) on there birth certs, then schlep over to the consulate, add my children into the system as citizens. Then a different day after they have been acknowledged in Israel as citizens, I could drag them out in person to give up there citizenship.

Hence why we are going to tuff it out hopefully they won't give us any trouble.

Misrad hapanim- considers all children of israeli parents to be israeli- it becomes a problem when your kids come to learn and they want them to join the army. In my experience they don't make a big deal if your just visiting. In the yeshiva that i am involved in they have this problem trying to register the students with misrad hadadtot.

It doesn't mean they didn't know who you were.
