Maybe add a "Wiki Contributions" stat to user's profiles (like the Main Site Deals stat), to incentivize people to edit and contribute to wiki's

Good idea.

In order for the wikis to be successful, a gamification system has to be put in to place. Without any incentives, most people wont contribute to the wiki. A mod can post a few new wikis each day that need updating. The first 3-4 people that volunteer to contribute, will receive x Wiki points depending on their contributions (arbitrarily decided by the mod), or some sort of flair that will display how much a member has contributed to the overall forum. This will also help a noob gain quick acceptance on DDF; they can easily prove that they are here to not just be spoonfed, but also contribute.

the wiki's would work best when someone takes ownership of each one. pride in your work is a motivator.

Cause a "start here" section is such an original, no one as brilliant as those on DDF could have come up with it.

Truth is, none of the big blogs are organized well for the newbie. I kinda always thought that was on purpose.

Did wiki's help as much as wanted?

A few got updated, I think most are still not at the level we thought necessary for this idea to work, although the bb thread has been getting a lot less Q's recently.

The biggest update was the Start Here board and wiki that were created. Should really help beginners.

I think the Start Here board stick out a little more by changing it to Red.
Also new users should get a notification upon registration that they should first look there.

Agreed that that would be nice, but the guys in charge here aren't techies, at least not with SMF. It's easy to say a pop-up notification would be nice, but it might be hard to actually implement it.

I thought wiki's would be a waste of time. I came to find out they are a great starting point on things I know nothing about.

I'm bumping this thread. With the influx of new users and new threads being created, I think DDF would benefit from some restructuring of how things are organized. I'm not saying it's bad, and I've only been here a year myself, but I'm just wondering if there's anything that can be changed to make it easier for people, especially n00bs, to find answers to their questions without making a new thread or having to read through thousands of posts like in the CSR thread.

I second your suggestion, along with some keyword indexing and possibly alphabetically listing threads.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

There is an "adopt a wiki" thread, and I personally have adopted one. Maybe find and bump that thread up.
