If the transatlantic flight is on UA then YQ shouldn't be too high. I think its 37k. Cancellation policy is good I think 3000 miles. You cant book a reservation within 4 days. ( Not sure about cancellation within 4 days)

It's distance based, from New York to LHR is 37k round trip. From ORD is probably more miles...

It was a theoretical question. Had it been for serious trip planning I wouldn't think twice before picking up a phone.

But to feed you, let's assume its EWR-YYC.  Now what?

Nothing. Some flights from US to Canada on AC using Aeroplan points are just 15k MILES RT.

Just an FYI: Using MM MILES on a USA-canada route is not an efficient way to use your MM miles. The attractiveness of MM is only intra country flights.

Not sure what you mean. The MM chart is attractive only intra country. If it involves 2 countries, it's no big deal. Especially AC where there is YQ. Explain your -1

Here's the breakdown for a sample RT award EWR-YYC on AC J:

UA: 50k + $63.40
AC: 50k + $165.70
LH: 55k + $112.51

UA -  as much as you suck, you still rock.
