*G rules should require you to get a free bag.
Well, as it turns out... whatever the rules, the answer seems to be no in practice:
From FT:
A quick follow up question, what happens if you purchase grabaseat (no bags)? Does *G get one free bag or is the only *G benefit an extra bag if you purchase +bag?
Only if you purchase +bag.
As above....need to purchase a seat+bag. The seat only fares actually contradict the *A policies NZ is supposed to adhere to. Not a good look!
That's what I would think but anyone actually paid for just the grabaseat and then got either large carryon or checked in bag at checkin just with a *A Gold (from united if that matters) ?
well, no. if you use self check - the machine won't spit out a bag tag and if you go to an agent - same thing. They probably could physically override and print one, but it's not part of the ticket, which they'll no doubt remind you of.
If you're on a jet (say A320 or B737) then a carry on should be ok - but the bigger/bulkier ones that look oversized might attract attention.
If you've booked the ticket ex-USA for instance and it has a domestic connection, I would assume the ticket will take on the baggage rules of the first flight not the domestic connection, but worth checking in advance.
A grab a seat fare with no bag - includes no checked bag regardless of which card you present!
