Type? .22LR. It’s cheap and “dirty” ammo. Brand not really gonna make much of a difference (especially if you can find bulk boxes).
Regular cost pre covid / if you can find in stock at a store that’s not price gouging is .06-.08 cents per round (500 rd box for $30-$35).

Looking into getting a Ruger AR-556
The issue I'm having is I can't figure out which scope is compatible with it. It has a big front sight I think it's called a A2 sight? Like this

My recollection of dirty was Russian ammo that was literally dirty and required much barrel cleaning after..

Also only applicable for plinking and not self defense

I always here that .22 isn't good for self defense. I find that a bit hard to believe. If the intruder has body armor then ok.

.22 doesnt have stopping power, unless you hit in very specific places. Can people die from it, absolutely, but by the time that happens, its very possible that the person with the .22 is no longer around. .38 is probably the lowest caliber recommended for self defense. Yes a .22 is better then nothing.
