So we ended up spending the night at the W New York in Union Square. It's a nice hotel and the location was excellent for us. They only let you book the smallest room type on the website so of course I called SPG and asked if it was possible to upgrade to something larger. They put us in the next size up room on the 8th floor with a pretty good view of Union Square, for an additional 1500 Starpoints. I felt it was totally worth it. My biggest complaint is instead of a minibar inside a cabinet (like I'm used to), they have a whole bunch of goodies out on the counter, as well as underneath it and luckily I found the price list buried in the middle of it all, because one small bag of popchips goes for $7 over there. We bought a bag twice the size down the street for $2.19. When I stayed at the St Regis (last year) we got two free water bottles and a bowl of fresh fruit in the room, also free. So until I noticed the well-hidden price list I thought the chips and granola might have been a perk. They have an Acura that you can reserve to get a free ride within a reasonable distance, but it was booked basically the whole time we were there. They also have free granny smith apples in the lobby
