Domestic United Stopover w Kids

I will be having a stopover on a flight EWR to California with 2-3 hr stopover in Denver and Houston. What can I do there, where can I got to make this experience the most pleasant with a 2.5 and 9 month old children?

Is there a CC that I can get that would give me lounge access or the like that would make this stopover less stressful?

The United Mileage Plus Explorer card comes with 2 lounge passes.  The United Club Card comes with a United Club membership. 

You can also buy day passes pretty inexpensively on this forum or on ebay.

Yes. That is one stopover each direction, and it was with Dan's Ontario deal If I have a Chase United Milage Plus Card, do I get automatic 2 checked luggage and lounge access?

Yes and no. You will get two free checked bags on the reservation, but you will not get lounge access with the Explorer card

On another note, what can I do to avoid the $10.99 a day the car rental place charges for those (cheap, dirty)  $50 car seats. Just the car seats for 2 kids would be more than the entire car rental! Any ideas? Are there compact cheap car seats i can buy and bring or something? Any one have some insight in this field?
