I think credit card purchase will get cut off tonight. The author of the memo probably forgot that there are 31 days in March and the POS systems are set to cut off CC purchases on April 1.

Do we know for sure that they lose money on each VR? What is the source for that?

Retail stores generally don't do things that lose them money outright, and selling VRs for cash vs. CC doesn't help them improve their margin, it just gets rid of costly fraud and collateral investigations, etc.

If they're changing the system then it won't help if the cashier never heard about it. The computer just won't process it

According to my calculations if CVS is charged a CC processing fee of 0.78% & they keep the entire $3.95 per card they break even.

Why should cvs be so worried about fraud ? The cc companies should as they would eat the loss.

The way many retail deals work is that a distributor, who has relationships with many types products (in this case, GCs) will pay a certain large lump sum amount just to get their product in the chain, they will also pay for displays and promotions, if any (halevai), and for a service to come in at least monthly if not more often and be responsible for the card rack as a whole. They may have also paid for the prime placement of the card racks, for the smaller displays by the check out, etc.

The distributor can do all this because they buy the cards (or more accurately, the pins) from the banks or companies at a discount. Yeah, the cards are marked $20-$500 for a reason. No one in the supply chain pays $500/card until we come along.

All this before the fee is even in the picture.
