I've always wanted to see a rocket launch, but was never in FL when they were actually doing one.
Flying in for it is hard because they often reschedule - at least on revenue.
After getting into the miles game, it's easier on an avios ticket (well, unless they reschedule within 24 hours of flight).
In any case, the next launch from Canaveral (1 hr drive from MCO) is scheduled for 7/15 11:36am, and I booked the AA JFK->MCO flight at 7am (arriving 9:30, so I hope to have enough time to get the car and drive over there).

Anyone interested in coming for a spaceflight DO? :)

Tempting, but the CLE flight doesn't arrive until 9:46.
Slight delay and it's all in-vain.

It's 35 minutes to the coast (Titusville) where you can see the launch. 1hr to Playalinda beach, which is the closest point to the pad you can get. So if running late you can stop at the coast and watch from there.

Plus time to get off the plane, get to the car rental facility, etc.
Seems risky to me.

Do they not have afternoon launches?

I was in MIA when the final Shuttle mission launched. It still hurts that I couldn't make it up there :'(.

For us in the Northeast, the Wallops Flight Facility in VA might be a better option:

In fact, the launches are sometimes visible from NYC as well. I will yet get a picture like this one day ;D:

It all depends on where they need to get the satellite to.
Next one is scheduled for July 22, 8pm.

But they get delayed even more often than airlines :)

Yeah, I wasn't able to see that one from where i was at the time, still regretting it.
They don't launch as often as Canaveral, and the last big one blew up quite spectacularly if I remember correctly.

In fact looks like the next one from Wallops is 'no earlier than Oct 27'.

I have a friend who is a space nut. Apparently NASA sometimes has these lotteries for spots to see it even closer than the locations listed below, and he enlisted all his friends to enter the lottery for him.

So, just to update - I did go to see the launch yesterday - and even though there was a problem with the rental car I did make it there on time.
I'll try to post a TR soon.

We're planning a trip to the Colorado Rockies from July 29 - ~August 5. Basically 1 week of intense hiking and camping out. We have 2 people joining so far. Anyone else interested?
