Semi non-sequitur here, but all the Antarctica talk reminded me of a fantastic series I recommend to everyone: BBC's Frozen Planet (the UK version with David Attenborough, not the crap version for US tv). And especially the episode about humans living in Arctic and Antarctic regions, I think it was the 6th episode, The Last Frontier. They spent a fair amount of the episode on the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, which is this amazing year round research station.
