We're planning a trip to the Colorado Rockies from July 29 - ~August 5. Basically 1 week of intense hiking and camping out. We have 2 people joining so far. Anyone else interested?
oh how I'd love to join in

that's awesome- emerald lake in RMNP is beautiful, that's a long drive to even the north rim, especially if you stop at arches, canyonlands, along the way. will you have enough time for that?

The thing is I did the arch and canyonlands already, so would much rather see grand canyon. May just go direct from RMNP. So much to do!

How'd you get a permit? You won their lottery? Is it as cool as it looks? Do you have pics?

It was pretty wild actually, it used to be they would only give 20 permits per day (dont have any current info) 10 online - you had to get it 3 months in advance- they said it sold out each day for 3 months in the future. but they also gave out 10 permits on a first come first serve basis in the kanob UT  NATL monument field office. I was with 3 other guys and they opened at 7:30 and we were there at 7:45 and got passes 6,7,8 and 9 for the day! So, we were pretty lucky, what was even crazier was that- some other hiker came over to us after seeing our tsitsis and said " tsitsis- I haven't seen tstisis in Kanob in over 35 years!" We were shocked that on the border of utah and AZ someone would even be able to recognize a yid. then we went our way to the dirt road. That is the basics of the story!

I would have to get out my external hard drive to find those pics- this will have to do for now: http://www.thewave.info/CoyoteButtesNorth/index.html

my bad forgot to tell you about that. So, when you get your permit, they give you 2 pgs of pictures that have arrows on them and they say- as you are hiking you should see these sand dunes, or buttes etc.. and walk between them etc. so basically by just pictures- it was crazy. pretty pretty wild. our problem wasn't getting to the wave- it was getting out form the wave- they dont give you pictures for that, BH there was a former pilot with some crazy GPS system and we followed him the 3 mile hike back to the car

You keep saying "it used to be" only 20 permits per day. Has this changed? I don't see anywhere that it changed

Indeed. Although seems likely that effective January they will only hold two lotteries (one Dec 1 for Jan-July, one June 1 for July-Dec) and that instead of having first come first serve for the remaining ten tickets, they will hold a lottery two days prior.
