You keep saying "it used to be" only 20 permits per day. Has this changed? I don't see anywhere that it changed
I have no idea, I was just saying what it was a few years ago, I do not have any up to date info on this

Could be ticketed over the phone with ~24h stops at each airport according to the article.

I could be wrong, but I understood the part about the layovers to mean that with a 24 huor layover it's still  considered one flight.

Because Kalalau might actually happen ;)

Who here has 10 grand to blow on Antarctica? And what do you do with kids for that long?

I know I'm dredging up a 2 year old thread, but I saw some referrals to my website from DansDeals and found this thread after a quick google search! Haha I do still owe a trip report!! Dan kindly helped me figure out cheap LAN flights to get to the Falklands on miles.

Also if I can be of any assistance with an Antarctica trip, I'm happy to help haha. But honestly our trip was very unique. We tagged along with Stewart Mcpherson, a natural history presenter (think David Attenborough), who was filming an episode of his soon to be released series "Britain's Treasure Islands." He kindly offered us to join at cost - so we just split 1/6 of the cost of the private charter. It was still about $10K per person for 30 days on the boat, all food and lodging included.

So I actually have no idea how to get a normal cruise to Antarctica.

But I would say a few things:

- If you ever do plan to go I would go for more than 2 weeks. Our boat was a slower vessel so it took about 5 days of sailing to get from the Falklands to the Peninsula, but even the faster tourist boats take at least 3 days each way, so if you only go for 2 weeks about half of that time is just being sea-sick on the boat. Also Antarctica itself is huge, we only went a few degrees south along the tip of Antarctica and didn't get close to the Arctic circle. If you only went for two weeks it'd be a very short trip. I'd say 3 weeks minimum, and ideally 4.
- Ushuaia is the easiest place to book a tour from, and they are fairly common. I believe 30K tourists visit yearly.

Lastly, I just got back from a trip to Greenland, also with Stew! It was very similar, but I'd suggest going to Antarctica first as it is more mind-blowing. You can see some photos at my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/EricLewPhotography

And my website: www.ericlew.com (click the greenland link)

Ok and I do owe a trip report. But i didn't take any photos of planes or hotels or anything... so any ideas for what to do for that?

Not too bad. SEA-JNU prices out at a svelte $175 in Sabre for economy, IIRC. Even with manually adding stops, it was well under $1k.
