Would love to hear how it compares to Waimea's grand loop hike that I did. Was really rough, but glad I did it before they closed it for good.

Unfortunately full loop was closed when we were there so this may not be helpful... but we did the awa'waapuhi part of the trail and we did the full kalalau in and out two days later. Kalalau is much harder (and better). Doesn't even compare. Would obv be much easier without all the equipment but a lot of climbing up and down the valley. Gorgeous views make it totally worth it though.

And yes, you will regret not doing it. Definitely the highlight of our trip

Not much of a comparison without the loop.  The most impressive and scary parts were on the connector hike.

The "scary" parts were not actually that scary when we did it but I can see it being treacherous if it were wet
