If you guys want to teach ppl photography, maybe go somewhere closer to home and sooner first.

No need to cancel the Hawaii trip but somewhere in the lower 48 would be much easier for people to attend.

Personally I'm thinking of going to Utah after Succos. Some where like Bryce Canyon or Zion National Park would an amazing place to practice photography skills.

Work is what you do between vacations.

It's local for most, and a start.

You can also go here.

Don't think you can get away for a guys trip Sun-Thurs? Kauai and Big Island photo tour?

Don’t see how it could be done – I can’t take a week off work and then still go on a vacation with my wife. But a 10 day trip with the family with a couple of days dedicated only to photography would work out perfectly for me.

August it is :)

Maybe we would hire a bootleg boat to take us out of the Kalalau Valley after a night or 2 and then skip over to the big island for a bootleg photo trip to the bleeding edge of an erupting volcano.

The problem with the volcano is that it’s impossible to plan far out. When I went last year, there hadn’t been an ocean entry in over a year. For months beforehand, I checked the daily reports for updates. As the trip came closer, the lava started breaking out, then slowly, excruciatingly, started to make its way to the ocean. Every day the flow would be a few feet closer. By the time I was two weeks out, the flow was about 200 feet from the ocean, and it looked like I’ll make it. But at the end, the flow did not only stop moving forward, it more or less stopped. And of course a week after I got home the flow finally hit the ocean L. Even now, some 8 months later, it’s fairly sporadic.

My point is that that until literally days before, you may bit even be sure of an ocean entry. Of course if the flow had been extremely strong for a while before it’ll probably still be there, but it still can’t be counted on 100%.

Of course there’s still the crater and lava lake, but these are not nearly as interesting or awesome

Not necessarily… On a practical level (for me at least), there no real difference between Hawaii and Utah except for a longer flight. If we want to do something closer it should be in the NY area like Marco Polo said – a fairly local day trip should be easy and accessible to most.

As far as attendance, more people is not necessarily better. Everyone could learn much more and get more out of it with a smaller group. Not to mention logisitcs.

+1

Just got back from a 5 mile hike, rated a 10/10 on scale of difficulty by New York State Parks and Trail Commission... we're zonked, but we enjoyed. Bring on camping, baby!

And just out of curiosity how many of you have wives who have never been to Hawaii but would be ok with you going without her?

+100, not sure how this is gonna work for me, unfortunately.

DDF Wives DO at the GHK or SRP ;)

What's there to work out? Start saving up your HGP/UR points.
Though my question is if your wife would rather be on the Kalalau Trail or at the GHK?

Miles isn't the problem... The problem is convincing my wife to stay at the GHK for a spa day or two while the boys head out to the trail.

She'd probably tell me "YOU stay at the GHK for a spa day, I'M going for the camping. See ya."

Updated the wiki - if I skipped anything or anyone please add it in.

I really hope this could work out, it'd be fantastic. Plus I've pretty much convinced my wife to leave the baby home ;).
