I'm in israel now and I just booked a ticket to Newark via Switzerland for $930 leaving mar 4 returning apr 9 check it out on skyscanner.net they have longer stopovers. I booked by private agent  so I have a 1 hr stopover each way.

Sorry for not answering, I'm in Israel. I'm flying swissair. But Lufthansa going through Germany has the same deal as well.
