Why the U.S. Penny Won't Die Like Canada's Just Did

In the US
There are objections to rounding, which one economist estimated could cost U.S. consumers as much as $1.5 billion over five years. Also, cutting out the penny may just put more reliance on the nickel—which is even more expensive to produce.

According to the Coin Update "The U.S. loses 1.4¢ on each penny it makes and 6.2¢ on each nickel".

More Penny facts.

There are 150 Billion pennies in circulation (makes one wonder why they still need to produce them)
Piled high they would stretch 60% to the moon

Good.  Get rid of both of them.

What do you do with the cost to US consumers when inevitably things will be rounded up, to the consumers disadvantage.

On the flip side though, US consumers might actually save, being than nothing would have the .99 gimmick any more and the price would be more clear.

On the other flip side though, if consumers would spend less because prices are more clear than what cost would that have on the economy as a whole.

For all I care keep the .99 pricing and just round the transaction to the nearest dime.

IIRC Israel rounds prices off to the nearest 10 agorot. Something tells me that is NOT the reason Israels' economy is in the state it is.

In the US
There are objections to rounding, which one economist estimated could cost U.S. consumers as much as $1.5 billion over five years.
Australia has been rounding to the nearest 5c for years. I can't say that the economy is suffering...
And once you get used to it, fumbling around with pennies when in the US seems so ... petty.
