Adblock sells out
« on: December 24, 2012, 03:31:30 AM »
I've been noticing that even though I've been using Adblck for years, with barely any ads getting through, lately a lot more have been getting through. At first I thought that the ad creators were getting smarter, but browsing through options found me this:
"Allow some non-intrusive advertising" was checked by default.
https://adblockplus.org/en/acceptable-ads
Apparently ABP has forgotten why we install it:

Starting with Adblock Plus 2.0 you can allow some of the advertising that is considered not annoying. By doing this you support websites that rely on advertising but choose to do it in a non-intrusive way

  • Location: The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.
  • Programs: 1. Search on google. 2. Search in the right board of DDF with a general word or two. 3. Read the wiki. 4. Read the thread. 5. Ask away.

Just search extensions again. There are multiple ad block programs you can run at the same time...

Why do you refer to it as "selling out"?

You think they make money by allowing ads ?  Apparently they are supporting some sort of movement to clean up internet advertising.

Exactly. "Selling out" would be if they take a kickback in return for allowing ads through. Here it seems like they're just trying to straighten out the Internet advertising scene - which is actually a worthy cause, considering that many sites (including DD) are largely ad-supported, and would buckle if all advertising went away forever.

You seem to like that work today

Last time I used it on DDF was 5 days ago.

Will all "acceptable" ads be unblocked?

No. Unfortunately, it isn't technically possible to recognize "acceptable" ads automatically. We have agreements with some websites and advertisers that only advertising matching our criteria will be used, their ads will be unblocked then. We hope to grow our list significantly over time.

it actually does sound like they're getting some kickback

You sure it's not just that AdBlock gets to set the rules?

Here's the litmus test: do you see anywhere on the AdBlock site where you can "sign up" to pay them money for letting your ads through?

Totally not the litmus test. Do you see anywhere on Amex's site a place where you can sign up to be an affiliate? Chase?

No, but I see such a place on FlexOffers and the like...

Besides, AdBlock isn't chashuv enough yet to sit back and let people come looking for them, the way Chase and Amex do.

Either way you still have the option to block all ads
