When the shingles need replacing you will/may need to uninstall and re-instal the panels. Also think about the added weight and the holes in the roof and how this will affect the wear and tear of the entire roof. Was your roof designed to hold the weight?
Im just saying that you should talk to a regular builder not just a solar panels salesman and then decide.

As we discuss this, it came up in my mind an interesting long read on the NYTimes Magazine about this.

Are there good incentives/rebates in the NY area for residential solar panels?

I have heard mixed reviews from people who have it. Go through it with someone besides the salesman.

there is a fed tax credit for up to 30% of the cost of the panels. It can be carried forward also.

I live in NY and had a very good experience with my solar panels. Due to the angel of my roof versus the track of the sun, I had very good exposure. It paid its self off over about 5 years and cut my electricity bill in half.

And what interest rate are you using to calculate when it paid it off?

If you are a borrower, you should use the highest interest rate you had outstanding. If you are a saver, you should use the rate you were earning on investments.

No upkeep involved. They come once every few years to test the equipment.

Buying an new home in Lakewood and thinking about solar panels. Solar company said it will cost 27k for 10 kilowatts. I get an immediate $8100 tax credit, for total cost of $18,900. I will also get roughly 12 SRECs a year which can be sold for roughly $210 each (price goes down each year though). Should also save more than $2000 in electric costs annually. Seems like a very good deal. Is there anything else I should be thinking about?
