Tether with blackberry?
« on: June 26, 2008, 01:55:01 AM »
Hey, does anyone know how to tether with blackberry.

I am getting the 8830 and I only have sprint internet, I don't have blackberry service. I know I can use opera and still be able to use the internet without bb service, how would I go about tethering it to my laptop without paying the additional fees?

Thanks.

I can try that, or I can figure out a way to tether. Which I am trying to do.

Problem is, I have already received my good portion from sprint retentions. I am already on a retention plan.

The "additional fees" I assume you're talking about are the BB server fees. The BB server is needed for the BB's propietary protocols, ie messaging and internal browser, but not for anything else (which is why opera mini works). Tethered data does not use the servers, and therefore makes no difference.

You can tether the average blackberry out of the box, but you'll have to pay extra for a PAM plan (Phone As Modem) with Sprint, otherwise you'll have to pay per kb of data. Contrary to popular belief, PAM is not included in unlimited data with Sprint.
There are ways, however, to prevent Sprint from being able to tell the difference between phone data and modem data.

In order to tether undetected, you need to disable something called multi-NAI. On samsung phones, this is in a hidden menu, on WM phones its an app you can run, however on some phones you are simply locked out and can't adjust the NAI settings.
I'm not sure how NAI works on Cdma BB's, but that's the info you're looking for. It may be possible, or you may have to add PAM to your Sprint account.

Good luck!

Edit: Just wanted to point out that if tethering is important to you, the BEST data devices to tether with is a WM or Symbian device that has Wifi. Both OS's have an app available that will route your cellular data connection to a peer-to-peer wifi network, effectively turning your phone into a portable wireless router. You can then connect your laptop, psp, ninetendo wii, etc, even at the same time if you don't mind a little lag (and possibly a prematurely dead battery!).

Thanks mordy, I have already have wmwifirouter, it's an awesome program.

With my mogul I had to delete a single reg key under internet sharing for sprint not to realize, I know how to do it with WM phones, I was just trying to find out if anyone has done it or knows about doing it with a blackberry.

Thanks again.

ModemShark www.mobishark.com lets you tether but cost costs you $50

You dont need PdaNet. You can use Internet Sharing. Before however you should get a registry editor www.resco.net and once installed go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing]
Then Delete "Extension"="rilphone.dll". The extension might be named differently depending on the phone. This should allow you to tether without Sprint realizing although you shouldn't use it too much because Sprint can still see the data traffic and may charge you.

What are you refering to?

Playing with the phone capabilities?
Is Sprint stealing when they have phones with certain features, and then lock them?; I bought a phone with advertised functions and I'm choosing to use them.

Using the capabilities to their upmost?
Sprint in their contract with you, just states that playing with the software and hardware voids the warranty.

If they state anywhere that it isn't allowed straightup, that may be stealing; its really only bereach of contract, which is actually lying if you intended to do that when you signed.

I think most people on here will agree with the following: yes it may be questionable, but please don't "call people out" for something unless you are 100% sure you are halachically correct.

+1

The app tether is prob the best option, there is a 1 week free trial, and works great

There isnt any good free tether options for BB. I have used a few, and find tether worth the cost (if you need it a lot)

For me, BB 9930 has a hotspot feature, and Verizon doesn't charge to use it
