it doesnt make a difference what you do in your everyday life. having kids kvetching and crying on your head is NOT a vacation
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Granted, it's 100% of a vacation when you have the kids, but being able to unplug from the real world for a while is still a vacation in my book --even if I need to deal with kvetching kids.

I've been on many trips that I would agree with you and call them family trips, not vacations. But I've also been on trips with the kids which I would certainly classify as vacations.

if theres ever a scenario where your kids are cranky and crying and kvetching on your head, and you still consider that a vacation, more power to you.

But if they're doing it on a beach, it's still a vacation. It's easier to handle.

I've heard that the $20 trick works well on certain kids, but YMMV

Not likely - In general unless it's very off season it's a lot less likely to work in a very expensive hotel - (I would say with the exception of Vegas but those aren't all that expensive)

For the St. Regis NY, definitely just tell them when you check in that you are visiting NYC for the special occasion of your 10th anniversary, and that while you are certain ALL the rooms are magnificent in the St. Regis, you are hoping he can find something special for you for your anniversary.  it should work like a charm -- I would go that route 100%, and avoid a $20 trick attempt.

I spoke to the reservations department. They confirmed that they had the notes in the system and that they will do their best but they could not confirm any particular upgrade. Btw should I tell them I am a kosher observer, just in case they do give me any goodies?

Thank you dr danny

When booking hotels in Venice and Rome I emailed them that I'm coming for my honeymoon and they upgraded me to a much nicer room.
It's not about the quantity of your posts.  It's about the quality.

Update from St. regis. Beautiful hotel very luxurious but not in a modern way. Great staff. Did not get suite but got a 1 category upgrade. They have a house car that is a 2013 bentley. Got a ride in it.

This works a lot of places in the U.S., but the hotel employees who take the money are usually putting their jobs at risk...
