Just to add my own experience to this whole thing: I did the HUCA thing for a while always asking them if they could push it (bkk-tlv) through the old system and have a liaison approve it down the line and not 1 in 30 calls resulted in any progress. I finally got fed up and emailed customer service directly. I received an email back that said as follows:
Thank you for your reply to AA.com.
I understand why you are frustrated, and I'm sorry for the difficulties
you have had with this itinerary. I know the inventories vary between
AA and EL AL. This can occur with any airline partner, as they supply
us with an allotment of seats to sell which can be very limited at
times.
In this case, you will need to contact an AAdvantage Expert and request
that they contact the Liaison Desk. Our Representative will need to
have you on the phone to assist you with availability, any applicable
cost involved and if possible, rescheduling your flight(s).
Please call AAdvantage Reservations at 1-800-882-8880 (24 hours/daily).

out for you.

As this seemed to be a dead end and another example of "i cant help you but I'm sure there is somebody who can", I decided to escalate the situation and so I proceeded to email the office of the CEO (soon to be "replaced") Tom Horton. I promptly received a callback from his "executive assistant" (forgot the name) who told me that he had looked into the matter and I could either book the day before or the day after but not the date that I wanted (even though expert flyer was showing it wide open in X and E). I explained to him the problem and the various ways people here described the work around and he said he looked into the old system and there is nothing he could do. He apologized profusely, saying that he was so sorry that he couldnt help acknowledging that I am a valuable customer who has a had a longtime relationship with AA. He was actually very courteous and nice (unexpected from AA) although completely useless.
Cheers for those who have gotten the itinerary that they wanted. The angel Gabriel himself must have been on your side because I have exhausted all of the avenues that I can think of for getting what I want.
