It's a simple confusion. LY biz is X class which is the Economy award class for all One World airlines. a lot of reps get confused with that.
I've yet to see a flight available in both, which an agent should say it's not available.

asking the passenger questions.

Planning a trip for 8 people for next summer.
4 of those 8 have to go together.  AA shows availability on El AL flights, but the rep says the awards are released two at a time. 
ExpertFlyer shows 5 seats available on the dates I am looking at.
Does that mean more seats will be released once 2 awards are booked?

I believe expert flyer is right but why not make a reservation with AA you can hold it 5 days or more

Same as any other airline. If AA determines a sale occured, they'll begin the process of closing the account and canceling the tickets.
They'll contact the account holder via email.
