Just finished Frank Abagnale's "Catch me if you can".

Very good book. I never watched the movie so I didn't have any spoilers. Slightly more vulgar than I thought. Not too long (~275 pages) which is a plus by me.

100 Deadly Skills

Meh. 3/5 for me. The problem with numbered list books is that often the author has to use filler information to get to that number. Stuff that are common sense.

I feel like this book was that. Besides for that a lot of the stuff I knew already from other places. There was some new information/ideas that I got from it but nothing major.

Basically if this is the first book of it's kind that you read you might find it interesting.

Just finished "I have lived a thousand years".

It's the first book I've read about the Holocaust.

Crazy. And here we are living like kings.

There is one thing that I'm still not sure about. I can't figure out what type of family they were. At times it seems like regular frum people and at times some things just don't match with that.

Halakhic Man by R' J.B. Soloveitchik

I think his last paragraph summarizes his book very well.

Number one the vocabulary used in the book is above my pay grade. Didn't like it at all. But that was the translators work not his. Also my newest pet peeve, don't translate pesukim, transliterate them. It's so much harder to figure out which posuk it is when it's in English.

The same goes for constantly bringing down other philosophical works.  I'm assuming that was one of his goals when writing the book. To show that you can be educated and be frum. (I honestly don't understand the appeal to this whole philosophy thing. I find it to be a whole bunch of fluff with no substance. Maybe that's my shallow understanding.)

Number two you can see clearly throughout the book how he and the Lubavitch Rebbe spoke. Very into bringing God into this world as opposed to bringing man to God's world, tzimtzum... :) (It's even in the picture above)

Overall I don't think I learned much from it. It's just observations and comparisons of philosophies in fancy English with some hashkafa thrown in.

Hatchet by Gary Paulson

Didn't read it but listened to an audiobook of it on Libby. It's around 3 1/2 hours long. I think it's a book for younger people but I enjoyed it.

IIRC, that is just one book in a 4 or 5 book series.

I'm guessing this would be the best place to shamelessly plug a book I just published with a friend of mine (my apologies if not, my DDF etiquete is a bit rusty, happy to move it if there's a more appropriate spot).

Torah && Tech is the name of a newsletter we've been publishing for a year and a half. It features a weekly Dvar Torah relevant to people with an interest in Torah and/or the world of tech, though we make an effort to keep it approachable to people without an extensive background in either.

After a year we decided to publish the first year's worth of Divrei Torah on the Parshiot as a book which can be found here.

You can also subscribe to the weekly newsletter here and get a free preview of volume two ;)

P.S. Hi

Are there any Sherlock Holmes fans on the forums? I've read most of the stories throughout the years, some multiple times, and I've found myself becoming quite an admirer.

I've read them all.

Admittedly many years ago.

Have you become a super-fan in the process? When I was reading them heavily, I subconsciously started using some of his oft-used terms.

Lakewood - If you'd like a free copy of Daddy's Girl by Dina Neuman (or something like that - writes for Ami),
you can get it at the public library. It's on a cart marked "Free" near the entrance (on your left coming in).
