Just saw your question now because the thread just got bumped. The answer is a definitive yes, you should read the books. In my opinion it is almost impossible to follow all the characters without reading the books and understanding who is who and what is what. Just a note that as of the last season the HBO writers have basically taken a shortcut and changed parts of the story.

With a few slight spoilers to the books, the show ended exactly where ADOD left off.

As long as I Live has got to be one of greatest inspirational books ever. this mans life causes us to appreciate the health we all (hopefully!) have and if , chalila lo aleinu, one doesn't, one can learn how extraordinarily steadfast this man clings to Hashem and how we must also. (the book writes that Rav Chaim Kaniefsy read the book and said its a ''must read'')

Loaded question. Three biographies were recently written, by Rabbis Adin Steinsalz, Joseph Telushkin and Chaim Miller. All three are good but very different styles. The former is written from a more personal angle, the latter two are biographies, albeit not objective ones.

I have this book, it's a nice story, but I didn't feel the life-changing inspired vibes other people describe.

Take this for what it's worth: second-hand from reliable (IMHO) sources. Telushkin's is the most "inspiring" hence NYTimes bestseller; MIller's the most "authentic" historical account.

Learn his Torah, you'll find something that isn't in any biography honestly, I wouldn't outright recommend any of the three, though all are an interesting read overall.

Same is true for all his books, at least the ones I read.

Vetted? I'm afraid the people who provided him with documents were selective/biased, same with their "checking for accuracy". But Friedman, Berger, Deutsch etc. are at least equally biased.

Thanks everyone. I ended up going with Telushkin... because the other was sold out at BookDepository.com and I needed it shipped to Israel.   So that helped choose.


BTW that's a great site for anyone who wants to order any books to be shipped to Israel or other countries.

I know u bought it already, but I found The Rebbe to be very informative and intresting. (I'd assume the style and possibly intentions of the authors is not what your looking for.)
