Earning cc miles from someone elses name

If I were to apply now for a new delta cc for my father, but I would put in my skymiles number, would I earn the miles or it wont go through?

Names have to match. Just use his account to book.

I wanted the delta reserve as I need some mqm to complete my status match challenge, which if the miles go to him I wont gain anything. any way around this?
