I've heard that before - even saw it once in print from a shul Rov. But it sounds like you're saying the reason would be that the R"Y are more likely to mess up, which makes no sense. At this point, it's probably more R"Y getting siddur kiddushin than anything else, so they have plenty of experience. The reason this shul Rov gave had more to do with people not having enough of a kesher to their shul Rov anymore - which is also baloney IMO, because of course the R"Y that the chosson spends all his time around for a few years will have a bigger kesher than the shul Rov.

R' Chaim Kreisworth Zatzal was makpid on this in Antwerp, that he got the siddur kidushin not the Chossons RY

I think the origin is based on the tradition of the wedding being made by the kallah's father, so naturally he would select his rov rather than the chosson's rosh yeshiva. The wedding would be held in the kallah's town so the rov of the town was probably the only one on hand to perform the wedding anyway.

I hear that, and I would totally understand a shul Rov being upset if his congregant was making a wedding (for a daughter) and gave siddur kiddushin to his (ie the father's) R"Y instead of the Rov. But how often is the kallah's father choosing the mesader kiddushin these days?

The question is what did he miss? Were the eidim called up? If they were, wouldn't you think they would say something if they didn't get to see what they came up there for?
