The plane will be fine.
The 787 does not have the range for NYC-SYD.

it does, its just not financially worth it for the companies to fly direct

Not sure how you arrive at that conclusion considering the longest range 787 can fly ~8500 nmi and NYC-SYD is ~10,000...

788 Range=7,650–8,200 nmi
789 Range=8,000–8,500 nmi
EWR-SYD=8,629nmi

that could be the projected range when fully loaded with passengers and cargo, but if they would only fly with half the seats full...

Why the heck would they fly a route where they could only sell half the seats

When there's a plane with the range to do it, meaning that they can load it up, it will happen.

I think that feature was in the beta-version, but was ultimately scrapped in favor of... tipped wings.
