AA executive platinum upgrades

When flying aa as a executive platinum with a companion how does the upgrade work ?

you need to use 500 mile upgrade for the companion but they upgrade at you level.

Do 2 seat need to open at the same time ? will they give away 1 seat at a time to platinum and gold members ?

If i get upgraded on a flight and i go standby to an earlier flight, or i do same day change, do i get a seat in business or they put me back in coach unless theres another seat avail.?
