Card for non-resident
« on: May 31, 2008, 10:39:40 PM »
Hey all,
I have a friend on shlichus from Israel, and he'll be traveling out West this summer.
Any ideas for a CC, preferably with a gasoline cash back, that he can sign up for despite not being a citizen?
Thanks

Unless he uses someone else's social, I don't think he can sign up for one.

Even if he does have a social, you still have to be a legal US resident for most cards.

On MC and Visa anyone can be an authorized user - and he will enjoy all benefits of the card, including rental insurance, fraud protection and much more..

AMEX requires a SSN to add a card - so unless he has a SSN he cant get one withe AMEX.

I know that capitol one used to allow credit cards without a SSN and they used some other number instead, but I am not sure if it was official and if they still do it.
It is all from Hashem and he will continue to give!

AMEX requires a SSN to add a card - so unless he has a SSN he cant get one withe AMEX.
If you call AMEX to apply and say you don't know/have the additional user's ssn they will still send you the card under the primary cardholders ssn.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

He said he has an SSN, but he's not a citizen. He does have a bank account though.
Thanks all

If he has a SSN, he can most probably get a credit card as long as he has a residence in the US. Check with the credit card company your considering for him. The best card for a Gasoline rebate seems to be the Amex Simply Cash Card http://www.sunspotweb.com/aff/4B2C8A3D783E87B6C7B1?3E3887026CB2E35AB30BD738666228A338DD210130

Even if he does have a social, you still have to be a [b/]legal US resident[/b] for most cards.

What happens if someone, say at the age of 30, moves from Canada or some other to the US, gets a Social, gets a Passport and all (basically immigrates or naturalizes), what makes you a "Legal Us Resident" as opposed to a citizen?? (Been curious about this for a while).

For example say someone is born in Toronto but both his parents are US Citizens, he now has a claim to US Citizenship, and can get a US Passport easily (easier before 18 I believe). Now that hes a full fledged citizen, what would make him a "resident"? Is it what address your social is associated with?

Sorry for my longish posts, im just readin through random posts and remembering old questions I had.

As long as you have a SSN you can get a credit card.
Some may require citizenship (although I cannot confirm nor deny this) but I have never seen anyone ever check citizenship.
