How to get long stopover without paying for an extra flight
« on: April 16, 2012, 12:30:02 PM »
My wife and I are hoping to go to Eretz Yisroel for Shavuos (JFK-TLV or EWR-TLV if necessary). We would live to have a 24-48 hour stopover in Europe to do some sightseeing - probably via Amsterdam or Brussels, or possibly Venice - but when I search for tickets on Kayak I'm only given options with short layovers (<10 hours). If I want a longer layover they charge much more money to book it as a multi-city ticket. Is there a way - ideally online, or at least by calling an agent - to get a longer stopover without having to pay extra, and to research the various options? Thanks!

Did you check multi-leg trips on all the sites? When I had this issue a few summers back I was finally able to find a ticket from the states stopping in France for 2 days and on to Israel from Orbitz for a flight that was $50 cheaper than my original flight without a stopover. It may not be great advice but I would keep looking and playing around with it on all the sites. (Orbitz,Expedia,Travelocity etc)

Was biking to school :) just got a peek

It really depends on the airline.
Many times the cut off is 24 hrs.
Sometimes less

(there is a sevara to charge more believe it or not, the airline needs to check you in twice, so they are paying people at the airport, taxes etc)

I just booked someone through Venice for no extra fee.

Take off and landing is the primary cost IMHO, offset by serving more than one market.

The price of a flight has little to do with its cost.

Fair enough. Fare codes that allow/bar stopovers have somewhat. In general the arcane rules have some kind of (long outdated) basis in logic.

That I would assume is primarily to inconvenience the traveller.

Not at all. They know darn well that many folks, especially business travelers, will pay a massive premium for a nonstop.

Thats what I meant - fares that require a stopover are because they want it to be inconvenient and cater only to the low-end pax.

100%
In general stopovers a cheaper. When it comes to longer layovers thats when it gets expensive.

I'm just saying the sevara.

It does also have to do with flights being less booked. Direct US-TLV (barring US from PHL) flights are almost always full IME

Looking to book a paid  JFK - SLC - LAX with a 9 day stopover in SLC. I know Delta does have these flights, however the longest stopovers I could find is 4 days.
