IF you think you can muster up the willpower, I'd try a good old Healthy Diet and exercise. Get an idea of how many calories you are eating a day. And stick to healthy foods. Bread, Fruits, Vegetables, meat, fish, eggs etc.
For most Americans I think the don't be lazy diet works well. If someone wants to lose weight why wouldn't they want to work out? It not only helps you lose weight, but actually makes you have a healthy body. Obviously everyone is different and it depends on body type, but if you can work out then do it. Also no junk food or beverages besides water or the like always helps (alcohol has more calories than people think).
