AA charges $75 per award ticket if booked less than 21 days before travel. The fee seems to be automated, and the "workaround" by booking later date - then changing to early date, does NOT work. I tried HUCA x4, no luck. Any suggestions ?

if you book close to departure, that is the rule. there is a fee. end of story.

If you show up to the airport would they let you on a earlier flight without paying the expedite fee?

no same day as scheduled flight (or day earlier)

Yes, it's possible.

They don't charge an expedite fee at the airport.

They officially can charge you $50 same day change fee, but I have never been charged. Best place to request is in the lounge

Sometimes they ticket it anyways. Then you can just ignore their calls

I guess they can.
The times that I've done it, it hasn't been an issue.
