Starting from September 2018 there is a direct train line between the airport and Jerusalem's central bus station which is at the main entrance to the city.

To get to the train: Leave the terminal through exit 01 and it is directly on your right. You can buy a ticket from the automatic machines outside the station entrance.
Please note that the train only runs during the day and not at night. Check the Israeli rail  website in advance if you are not sure.

Israel Railway English site.

I'm assuming that a family of 5 with luggage may be better off with a taxi and that there's a taxi stand outside TLV airport.  What should that cost? To avoid being ripped off should I insist on a flat fare or meter?

Thanks all for the quick responses. It seems it's best to call Daka or Derech Eretz.

Get a big "minibus".  Call derech eretz or daka99 and tell them you need a minibus (tell them how many people and bags).  its like a personal nesher.  usually costs between 350-400.

Call the regular companies too.  Bar Ilan (5866666), Smadar (5664444), Ramot Alon(5022222).
Also try this guy: 054-220-5708 (ask him if he has מונית גדול .- מיניבוס) - i've used him before

they also claim this is good - 03-9711103

I did it recently, although not as many people. (4 adults, 3 kids)

Everyone speaks English if your giving them money

They sometimes take advantage of you if they see you speak English, better off imperfect Hebrew.

If they will try to take advantage then imperfect Hebrew will not be better. You will still stick out like a seminary girl

I'm not sure what you mean and I'm obviously not referring to unaffiliated with society Amazon tribe members. Any Israeli not living under a rock and providing a service will pretty much understand you to an extent, especially people who's business is by the airport

They all say that, you can still communicate. On side note I called then 3 times in the past two days and they spoke English every time
