So, as suggested here, I opened a new (additional) SPG account, and used that number to apply for a new AMEX SPG.
Result: SPG automatically merged my former account, leaving no trace of latter account, and AMEX SPG points were deposited directly to old SPG account - automatically - sans bonus!
What a waste of time! >:(

So, essentially the trick is to leave the SPG number blank on the AMEX application?  This is what I did and I hope it works.  I just got my second consumer card (still use the first one) (interestingly it says that I have been an cardholder since '10, even though my other AMEX cards say '02) --- so I think it could work.

mine had the same thing, said '10 instead of '08
