Of course, but why are they FRing right and left for buying GCs in stores?

The cancelling of cards has nothing to do with penalizing the buying of nonAmex cards (I actually thought of that for a moment) since Amex has no way of knowing which GC cards were bought in the stores. Also, they cite Fraud reasons which would apply to their own GCs, as well.

right. the whole thing doesn't make sense - if they don't believe in people buying GCs, why do they sell them? And why do they allow people to buy so many?

I could be wrong but they do want people to buy GC - that is why they sell them and market them. I don't think getting F/R-ed means you did something they "didn't like", rather look at it as you raising a red flag by exhibiting inconsistent patterns and behavior based on what they know about you and how you have previously acted. For their protection as well as yours. It's like a car salesman who wants to sell you a car but may raise his eyebrows if you are paying for the whole thing in cash. Or a bank, that wants your balances, still might be concerned if huge deposits are being made or money is being wired from shady countries.

I would never use an Amex card to buy Amex GC's. IIRC someone posted you don't get rewards so that is why they would not care.

Would it make sense that it is because it is my first purchase linked to an online account that only had AU cards on it?
They were all made online with my legit SSN and Bday.

I get asked for my SSN every time. It's just identity verification. Is this order larger than usual?
