I ordered a $1000 gift card to fulfill a spending requirement on my plat card, they said my gc was approved and then for some reason it was cancelled. should I retry ordering gcs of small denominations? would that make a difference? I am also nervous abt getting F/R'ed

.. should I just stay away from gcs?

It looks like they know your buying it to reach threshold spending. Is this your 1st time buying a gift card?

I would stay far away from the amex gc - using the plat card- but if you already did buy one DON'T use it, all those that I know that didn't start using it b4 it was canceled got there refund within a week, all those that started using it, some still have not gotten the refund yet. So I repeat ime DO NOT use the gc once it gets to u let it sit till they cancel it

I have done this before to me thresholds and havent had a problem yet.. my wife actually has been using one of the gcs I gave her and when she went to a hiemesh store in flatbush they asked her if she was using it because of cc points

! I guess even the stores are catching on to the gift cards..

Thanks for the warning. problem is that its so tempting to help me meet a spending threshold..

WARNING: AMEX seems to be giving a very hard time refunding gift cards now. After arguing for a while, they said they will process the request but cannot guarantee it will be refunded.

Anyone else have this experience?

I don't know. but i do know you can't get the free shipping without an Amex account

Is there a way to consolidate 4 different $100 gift cards onto one card so I can use it to make a bigger purchase online?
Or to somehow use them for PAYPAL so I could make a purchase on ebay with them?

ANY IDEAS?

Call the 800 # and ask them to combine them. You could just tell them you "lost" them or accidentally put them in the shredder. They'll send you a new card the next day.

They generally won't combine them to be a greater balance than the original card. So if you started with $100 cards they are not supposed to combine. If you started with larger cards and have $100 left they should combine it on to one of the cards just by asking - no need to tell them you lost it. Although as always, YMMV.

As an aside, when you call the gift card support, you will not be talking to americans - they've outsourced it to India. IME, it took them a long time to get things done. I was once combining about 20 gift cards to one, and it took almost an hour on the phone.

I tried calling and just as you said they won't combine 2 $100 gift cards. And yes they are all from India. How annoying.

Any other ideas out there?

1) If you can spend it as is, that's the most straightforward way.
2) Assuming you can't (if you could you would probably not be asking) are you willing to lose part of the face value to cash out?
3) if you can spend it easily, but find $100 cards to small to be practical, order a larger one, say, $500, spend whatevernyou want, then consolidate the $100 cards on the $500 dollar card, bearing in mind that the $500 card can never hold more than $500.

Do any of the above work for you?

Edit: You should be able to use them on paypal, but IIRC they have a 16 card limit, and I don't know how often you can replace cards. Probably as a fraud precaution. But for 4 cards, it may work.

read through the topic and saw this was hinted at but it's still not clear to me, what's the danger/limitations in ordering Amex GC to meet a spending threshold, loading the value of the cards into paypal, and then putting the money into my bank account/having them send me a check?

How are you "loading the value of the card" into your paypal account?

The main ones IMO:
1) Risk from bank who doesn't like you buying Amex GC
2) Risk from Paypal who might think it suspicious activity
3) Fees from Paypal
