Something sounds off, as cingular turned to back to at&t a couple of years ago

Unfortunately I don't know a solution for your problem, however, I would like to take this oportunity to advice people who are on their 1st month with At&t and want to stay but not lock into a contract that they can come into an At&t store, return the equipment provided by At&t and provide your own phones, that will allow you to keep their plan without being in a contract.
This can apply as well to new at&t customers that want to get one of their plans but are not sure if they want to lock into 2 years.

Never done it myself - and dont  know if you can keep your number - but you can look into it...(you probably will take a loss on the sale - but probably not as big as staying with att...or taking their cancel fees.
